“To understand leadership is to understand yourself”, has been one of my by-lines of for many years, particularly in MBA Leadership lectures.

At the end of the day when we think of leaders that inspire us, we see someone who is in control of themselves. An effective leader is one who understands their own responses and reactions, someone who is able to manage their emotional responses and reactions to people and situations such that they are able to maintain a relationship of influence with their followers. Knowing what turns you on, what irritates you, what motivates you, and what distracts you, are all part of effective leadership. If you understand yourself and your reaction, you are in a far stronger position to manage yourself and others without allowing your own emotional reactions to negatively impact.
