Myers Briggs Type Indicator

MBTI provides a useful method for understanding people by looking at the personality preferences that everyone uses at different times. These eight preferences are organised into four opposite pairs. When you take the Indicator, the four preferences (one from each pair) you are identifying those preferences as being most like you. These are combined into what is called type.

The MBTI is based on the work of psychologist Carl Jung who believed that our preferences do NOT change- they stay the same for a lifetime. What changes is how we use our preferences and often the accuracy with which we can measure the preferences.

MBTI functions as a tool that helps people in organisations:

  • Understand themselves and others.
  • Appreciate others so as to make constructive use of individual differences.
  • Approach problems in different yet healthy ways and thus be productive.
